Abstract

The biotechnology industry has emerged because developments in applied science have enabled the applications of genetic engineering tools to economically important problems. This paper provides a brief history of the developments in economic activity in the industry, including inventive activity. The "science-driven" nature of this industrial development will be documented with patent data and with patent citation data. The political issues of conflict between scientific discoveries and risk and consumer concerns will be addressed.
